Relief as Bangladesh Court Grants Bail to Hindu Monk Chinmoy Das
A court in Chattogram on Thursday granted bail to Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in one case, but he remains in custody as he faces multiple other charges, including a murder allegation. Judicial Magistrate Shakhawat Hossain issued the bail order after a hearing, while six separate cases against Chinmoy remain active, court records show.
Chinmoy’s lawyer, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee, told ANI by phone that the case in which bail was granted was filed by former minister Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin — the father of State Minister for Hill Tracts and Land Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin. The suit, lodged over incidents in the Mekhal area of Hathazari in Chattogram, accuses the defendants of land grabbing, intimidation and assault. “Six people, including Chinmoy Krishna Das, were accused in the case filed in 2023,” Bhattacharjee said.
Chinmoy is also linked to a high-profile murder investigation. On November 26, 2024, clashes around his bail in a sedition case — tied to allegations of desecrating the national flag — preceded the fatal beating and hacking of lawyer Saiful Islam. Saiful’s father, Jamal Uddin, subsequently filed a murder case naming 31 accused.
Authorities have filed multiple cases against Chinmoy and others, covering attacks on police, obstruction of government duties, assaults on lawyers and litigants, and “cocktail” explosions. In the murder matter, police submitted a charge sheet on July 1 last year, alleging the lawyer was killed following incitement and directions from Chinmoy Krishna Das. On August 25 the court accepted the charge sheet against 39 accused, including Chinmoy, and the trial is currently at the stage of witness testimony.
Despite the bail in one matter, Chinmoy remains detained as proceedings continue on the other charges. The original report was published from a syndicated feed and, except for the headline, has not been edited by NDTV staff.
