A few hours after the Punjab government withdrew his Z-plus security, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha was promptly handed protection by the central government. The Home Ministry has directed the Delhi Police to provide Chadha with Z-plus (Z+) security while he is in the national capital and Y-category protection when he travels outside Delhi, officials said.
Punjab had earlier removed Chadha’s Z-plus cover following reported differences between the MP and the state party leadership. Sources said that last week the Punjab government decided to revoke the protection. On Wednesday afternoon, Punjab police officers responsible for Chadha’s security were reportedly called to the headquarters for further instructions. Political observers note that within a short time after Punjab’s move, the Union Home Ministry stepped in and ordered the Delhi Police to ensure Chadha’s safety.
The swift intervention by the Union Home Ministry — overseen by Home Minister Amit Shah’s office — has fuelled speculation in political circles that Chadha may be inching closer to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Party insiders, however, insist there is no immediate plan for him to join the BJP. Chadha still has two years remaining in his Rajya Sabha term, and sources close to him say he intends to remain within AAP while continuing to criticise the party’s top leadership, a role observers compare to the outspoken stance taken by Swati Maliwal in recent months.
Political strategists note that a switch could still occur before the Punjab assembly elections if the BJP decided to court him. Publicly, Chadha questioned the motives behind the withdrawal of his protection, asking why attempts are being made to silence his voice. “I do not understand why there is an attempt to silence me; I speak only for ordinary people and for their benefit,” he said, adding that opponents “may be able to silence me, but they cannot defeat me,” and that he will continue to stand with the public and speak on their behalf.
The sequence of events — Punjab’s withdrawal, the immediate recall of local security personnel, and the Union’s rapid provision of protection — has highlighted tensions within AAP and renewed debate about Chadha’s political future.
