Breaking: Bishnupur’s Thinungei Clashes Leave Six Injured
Fresh violence erupted on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in Thinungei in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, when clashes between security forces and protesters left at least six people injured and prompted authorities to impose an indefinite curfew across the district under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
Tensions escalated around midday as residents reported that security personnel fired several rounds of tear gas and live ammunition during confrontations; officials had not confirmed the exact nature of the force used at the time of reporting. Witnesses said the unrest began after protesters stopped vehicles they suspected were transporting arms, an action they said triggered the escalation. A mob reportedly set at least one vehicle on fire during the unrest.
Demonstrators continued to block roads in and around Thinungei, causing major disruption to movement. Several witnesses described activists stopping and inspecting vehicles they considered suspicious, adding to a tense atmosphere across the area. Additional security reinforcements, including personnel from the Rapid Action Force (RAF), were deployed to restore order.
Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam asked the public to be patient over the ongoing investigation into the Tronglaobi bomb blast, saying identifying those responsible will take time and that authorities need space to complete their inquiries. He appealed for public cooperation and said the government was responding to concerns raised after the incident.
Konthoujam also said steps are being taken against camps linked to the banned United National Liberation Front (UNLF) in accordance with the peace agreement signed with the Government of India, and that some unauthorised camps are being closed after authorities gave time for compliance and expected a positive response. The situation remains volatile as the curfew continues and security forces work to reestablish normalcy.
