Sujata Chowdhury Alleges Online Harassment, Moves NCW Against Assam CM
Guwahati: Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, mother of Assam Assembly candidate Kunki Chowdhury, has lodged a formal complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW), alleging that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made false and defamatory statements about her during an election campaign, which she says triggered sustained online harassment and abuse. Chowdhury, a resident of Sarumotoria in Dispur, says she is a private citizen with no direct role in politics and was pulled into controversy solely because her daughter is contesting the Guwahati Central seat in the ongoing Assam Assembly elections.
In the complaint submitted to the NCW, Chowdhury says that at a public campaign event Sarma accused her of hurting “Sanatani sentiments,” harbouring sympathies for Pakistan, supporting “anti-national” individuals, and publicly consuming beef. She described those allegations as “completely false, baseless, and malicious,” and said they were intended to defame her and politically target her daughter.
Chowdhury disputed a photograph cited during the campaign, saying the image was taken at the International Church of Cannabis in Denver, United States, and that the object visible in the picture was an artistic prop resembling a cannabis joint rather than any form of food. She also stated that claims about her eating beef are “factually incorrect and deliberately misleading,” noting that she is a vegetarian.
The complainant further alleged that, after the remarks, her personal photographs — including images featuring her minor son — were widely circulated on social media without her consent. She accused unidentified actors of sharing manipulated images and AI-generated content that intensified online abuse, harassment, and reputational harm.
Chowdhury called the developments a violation of her dignity, privacy and safety, and said the episode has caused severe mental distress to her family, particularly her minor child. In her plea to the NCW she has asked the Commission to take immediate cognisance, order an investigation into the alleged defamatory statements and digital harassment, direct removal of harmful and misleading content from social platforms, initiate legal action against those responsible, and provide protection for her family’s privacy.
