AJP and Police Standoff in Dibrugarh Over ‘Unauthorised’ Search

Dibrugarh, April 10: Tension flared at the residence of Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi in Gadapani, Dibrugarh, on Friday, a day after voting in the Assam Assembly elections, after party supporters alleged a large team of Dibrugarh police entered the premises without prior notice or legal authorisation.

AJP leaders said police arrived looking for an individual linked to the party but, they alleged, did not produce a warrant or any formal paperwork before searching the house. AJP secretary Chittaranjan Basumatary accused officers of entering forcefully and intimidating those present. “They forcefully barged in and charged inside. They even called the owner of the house and forcefully took his signature. When we questioned them, they were compelled to run away,” Basumatary said.

Party workers also claimed there was no magistrate or legal notice accompanying the search and that some 20–30 personnel were involved. “They showed us no warrant. Is this a democracy? Do they follow the Indian Constitution?” Basumatary asked, according to AJP accounts.

Another AJP functionary said police searched every room despite being repeatedly told the person they were seeking did not live at the residence. The same source alleged officers tried to seize Form 17C documents — the booth-wise polling records that include voter turnout, votes cast and Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) totals. “They wished to snatch away Form 17C from us. When we tried to stop them, they threatened to drag us to the police station,” the party member claimed.

The confrontation followed reported poll-day violence in Kutuha village under the Khowang constituency, where clashes between BJP and AJP supporters were reported. AJP leaders accused the police of partisan conduct and of failing to act on complaints from their members over the Kutuha incident. “One of our members got beaten yesterday in Kutuha and till now no one has been arrested,” Basumatary said, adding that threats had been made by individuals linked to a local MLA’s family.

AJP officials accused the ruling dispensation of using police to intimidate opposition workers during the electoral process and warned of protests against the Dibrugarh police administration. The party said supporters would stage demonstrations in response to the alleged actions.
