PM Modi Condemns TMC Over ‘Lawlessness, Infiltration’ in Bengal

KOLKATA, April 9 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a blistering attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress on Thursday, urging voters to remove what he called the “nirmam” (cruel) TMC government in West Bengal and promising six guarantees if the BJP wins the Assembly polls. Speaking at an election rally in Suri, Modi accused the state administration of lawlessness, cited the 2022 Bagtui carnage in Birbhum in which around 10 women and children were burnt alive, and vowed action against what he called “illegal entrants” and their facilitators.

At Suri, Modi intensified the BJP’s focus on alleged infiltration, referring to last week’s gherao of judicial officers in Malda to denounce the Mamata Banerjee administration. “I stand before you today to make this promise: Once there is a change of guard in state power following these elections, I will initiate a special inquiry against the facilitators of infiltration in this state and put them behind bars,” he declared. He said the Bagtui killings and the “Malda siege” were evidence of a “maha jungle raj” sustained by an “unholy nexus of syndicate, mafia and corrupt politicians.”

Modi accused the TMC of betraying its slogan “Maa-Mati-Manush” (mother, land, people), saying the slogan had become “empty rhetoric” while citizens lived in fear of “TMC goons.” He claimed land encroachment by infiltrators had worsened, that cottage industries were declining, and that crude bombs had become common in households. Modi also alleged that infiltrators were undercutting locals for jobs by accepting lower pay, forcing indigenous workers to migrate, and pledged that unauthorized entrants would be deported and those who facilitated them jailed once the BJP took power.

On Friday at a rally in the port city of Haldia, Modi announced six guarantees for Bengal if the BJP wins the state: replacing what he called the TMC’s “reign of fear” with “trust”; reforming governance and making public servants accountable; reopening files on corruption and crimes against women allegedly suppressed by the TMC; prosecuting corrupt leaders regardless of rank; ensuring government benefits reach refugees who entered India legally while barring infiltrators from staying; and immediately implementing the 7th Pay Commission for state employees, teachers and related sectors.

Modi also sought to counter Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s warning that the BJP would restrict consumption of fish, saying Bengal’s high demand for fish was being met by imports because the TMC had failed to boost local production over 15 years. He promised the BJP would make the state self-sufficient in fisheries and the seafood sector, noting the central government has a dedicated ministry and has allocated a record budget for fisherfolk.
