At least 18 people were injured, several critically, when a vehicle carrying participants in a Congress rally lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch in Rupahihat, Nagaon district, on Tuesday, April 7. Local authorities said the vehicle veered off the road and fell into a deep roadside depression during the rally procession.
All the injured were taken immediately to Nagaon Medical College and Hospital, where doctors said several victims were in critical condition and receiving treatment. Emergency teams and hospital staff remained on alert as doctors stabilised the most seriously hurt.
Those identified among the injured include Moksedul Haque Kabir, Ahmed Hussain Ali, Sajibur Rahman, Masharaf Hussain, Mujibur Rahman, Anarul Islam, Tajmul Haque, Mofidul Islam, Rakibul Haque, Azibur Rahman, Kabil Uddin, Sarjahan, Mushahidul Alam, Hamidul Islam, Rafiqul Islam and Jahirul Islam, along with others whose names have not yet been released.
A police team reached the accident site soon after receiving information and has launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the crash. Authorities said the probe will examine vehicle condition, driver actions and the organisation of rally transport to determine accountability.
In a separate election-related incident, a vehicle bearing registration number AS12CC0620 was involved in an accident that left a minor seriously injured. Preliminary reports allege children were present on the streets as part of campaigning activities, which would raise concerns about compliance with Election Commission rules that bar the use of children in political campaigns.
Officials said it has not yet been confirmed whether the Election Commission will formally examine possible violations, and further inquiries are underway. Both incidents are being reviewed with emphasis on vehicle safety, adherence to election regulations and the responsibility of organisers managing campaign logistics.
