TMC Assam Chief Dramatically Resigns: Poised for Powerful Return to Congress | Guwahati News
Guwahati: Ripun Bora Resigns from TMC, Cites Disconnect with Assamese People
Guwahati: Ripun Bora, the chief of the Assam unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), announced his resignation from the party on Sunday. He explained that the people of Assam perceive the TMC as a "regional party" of West Bengal and are not supportive of its presence in their state. This perception, according to Bora, has hindered the party’s ability to effectively challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam.
The former president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) has indicated plans to rejoin the Congress party during an upcoming meeting in the Charade district on September 8. "Our goal was to stop the BJP by leveraging TMC as our platform. However, since the people did not accept this idea, I do not want to waste my energy in TMC. Congress is my old home, and I will have no hesitation about rejoining it," Bora stated.
In his resignation letter, Bora expressed dissatisfaction with the TMC’s disregard for his suggestions, which included appointing an Assamese leader at the national level, declaring Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika’s residence in Tollygunge as a heritage site, and converting Madhupur Satra in Cooch Behar into a cultural hub.
Bora’s departure from the TMC marks a significant shift in Assam’s political landscape, underscoring the challenge regional parties face in garnering support outside their home states. His likely rejoining of Congress is expected to strengthen the party’s efforts against the BJP in Assam.
