Residents of India’s Northeast were reportedly subjected to racist abuse at Patna railway station on April 2, when members of a dance troupe from Arunachal Pradesh said they were taunted and called derogatory names while trying to use the station facilities. Multiple videos of the confrontation have surfaced online, sparking outrage and renewed concerns about harassment of northeastern people in states governed by the BJP.
According to the footage, the incident began when the women-members of an Arunachal Pradesh dance troupe-were asked by a woman at the station to show identification as they went to the restroom. The troupe members protested the check, and the woman then allegedly made racist remarks. In the video one of the young women is heard saying, “We are residents of Arunachal. We want to go anywhere in the country. But we are afraid because of some people. They called us ‘chinki,’ ‘Chinese,’ ‘momo.’”
After the exchange, the accused woman is heard speaking in English, saying, “My favourite food is momo,” a comment the troupe members interpreted as flippant and insulting. One of the women in the video responded that such behaviour damages the country’s image and reflected ignorance, saying those who speak like that “have no idea about the map of the country” and that the “rude, uneducated people” actually know nothing.
Railway police told reporters they believe the accused woman has mental health issues and noted she has previously caused disturbances at Patna station; her family has reportedly been informed. Authorities’ description of the woman’s condition has not been independently verified in the available footage.
Local activists and the troupe members say the episode is not isolated. They point to a pattern of similar harassment against people from Northeast India in recent months in several BJP-ruled states. The source material notes that two months earlier three women from the Northeast faced comparable abuse in Delhi, and that related incidents have also been reported in states such as Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, including a past case in Uttarakhand in which a student from Tripura was killed.
The videos and the responses they have provoked renew calls from community leaders for better protection and public awareness to prevent discriminatory harassment of northeastern residents traveling across the country.
