OpenAI Urges California AG to Investigate Musk’s Alarming Anti-Competitive Tactics!
OpenAI has formally requested investigations by California and Delaware attorneys general into what it describes as “improper and anti-competitive behavior” by Elon Musk. This development precedes an upcoming trial between the artificial intelligence lab and Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 alongside several other tech executives.
In a letter penned by OpenAI’s strategy chief Jason Kwon, the organization accused Musk of orchestrating efforts to undermine its operations, claiming he is collaborating with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on these maneuvers. Musk departed from OpenAI in 2018 after attempting to persuade its leaders to merge with Tesla. Since then, he has launched his own rival company, xAI, and has engaged in legal battles with OpenAI, including a lawsuit filed in 2024. In the suit, Musk contended he was “assiduously manipulated” and “deceived” when OpenAI considered transitioning to a for-profit model.
As the trial approaches, jury selection is set to start on April 27 in California’s Northern District. Kwon expressed concern in the letter that Musk’s actions could obstruct OpenAI’s mission to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI), which aims to create AI systems that potentially surpass human capabilities. He stated, “These attacks are designed to take control of the future of AGI out of the hands of those who are legally obligated to ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity and place it into the hands of competitors who lack mission-driven principles and ignore any responsibility for safety.”
OpenAI has previously voiced apprehensions regarding Musk’s statements and tactics. Earlier this year, it informed investors and banking partners that it anticipates Musk might make “deliberately outlandish, attention-grabbing claims” as the lawsuit proceeds. The organization warned that Musk’s comments about OpenAI may not align with reality and could reflect the harassment techniques he has previously employed.
The ongoing clash between OpenAI and Musk highlights broader tensions in the tech community concerning ethical AI development and corporate responsibility. As tech giants navigate this complex landscape, the implications of AGI development continue to be a focal point of discussion among industry leaders and regulators alike.
This latest request for investigation by OpenAI adds a new chapter to an already contentious relationship, raising critical questions about competitive practices and the future direction of artificial intelligence development.
As the trial date approaches and both parties prepare for a legal showdown, the tech industry is closely watching for developments that may reshape the trajectory of AI technologies and their governance frameworks.
