In an exclusive interview following a campaign stop in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, also the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), expressed confidence in securing a decisive victory in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. He emphasized that the election is not merely a contest; rather, it revolves around continuing the successes of the past five years under the ‘Dravidian Model’ government.
Stalin dismissed fears that the election would be a close race, asserting that a multi-cornered contest would actually favor the DMK. He stated, “Other parties lack the organizational strength and infrastructure to challenge us. Our achievements and electoral promises have captured the imagination of the people.” He expressed optimism that the results would challenge the belief that the DMK could not win back-to-back elections.
When questioned about expanding the alliance to include smaller parties like the DMDK, Stalin clarified that coalition-building was about uniting like-minded entities rather than an obligation. He pointed out, “There is no compulsion, but there is a responsibility to accommodate and work with them.” Highlighting the ideological cohesion since the formation of the front in 2019, he described the alliance as a unique force in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
Stalin elaborated on the significance of the 2026 election, stating, “It is about protecting Tamil Nadu’s interests against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance.” He welcomed the participation of parties sharing a democratic outlook and stressed the necessity of opposing what he sees as a threat to democracy posed by the BJP.
Addressing concerns about potential tensions among allies due to new party inclusions and delays in candidates’ announcements from the Indian National Congress, Stalin assured, “We have conducted detailed discussions and finalized seat-sharing arrangements. There is no bitterness.” He expressed confidence in achieving a positive election outcome through unity.
Discussing the DMK manifesto, Stalin hailed the Illatharasi Scheme, which offers ₹8,000 coupons for purchasing or repairing household electronics, as a standout initiative of the campaign. He added that other ambitious plans, such as increasing monthly financial support for women’s rights and installing free meters for agricultural pumps, would significantly impact the state’s development. Initiatives aimed at enhancing skills, promoting employment, and facilitating loans for women’s self-help groups further align with the DMK’s vision for balanced growth across Tamil Nadu.
Responding to questions about his criticism of the AIADMK-BJP alliance and actor Vijay’s ongoing critiques of the DMK, Stalin stated, “I do not consider anyone my adversary. I do not allow my attention to be diverted from my objective.” This reflects his focused approach as he prepares for the crucial electoral battle ahead.
As the election draws near, the DMK’s momentum appears strong as it aims to secure a second consecutive term, underscoring the significance of its established alliance and governmental achievements in the face of competition.
