GANGTOK, April 5, 2026 — Governor Om Prakash Mathur, on the second day of a three-day visit to Mangan district, carried out a detailed inspection of development works and frontline posts in North Sikkim, focusing on connectivity projects and troop welfare across high-altitude border areas.
The Governor began with an inspection of the under-construction 360-foot Bailey bridge “Zema‑II.” Lieutenant Colonel Hemant Kumar of the Border Roads Organisation briefed him on progress, technical details and strategic measures to strengthen operational capabilities along the border. Mathur praised the BRO’s work, saying the bridge-once completed-will significantly improve access to remote border communities and benefit local residents.
Mathur then visited the holy Gurudongmar Lake, situated at about 17,800 feet near the China border, where he offered prayers and reviewed development activities carried out under the Indian Army’s Operation Sadbhavana. Those outreach efforts include construction of community halls, tourist viewpoints and essential utility facilities aimed at boosting infrastructure and local amenities.
The Governor also inspected security deployments, visiting the Indo‑Tibetan Border Police’s Kerang Post (11th Battalion) at roughly 17,000 feet and Donkhyala Pass-the highest motorable forward post at about 18,400 feet. He interacted with personnel at both posts and commended the troops for their dedication and resilience in challenging conditions.
By combining infrastructure upgrades with outreach initiatives and on‑site engagement with security forces, the visit underscored state and central efforts to enhance connectivity, community facilities and operational readiness in India’s high‑altitude frontier regions.
