The Lokapriyo Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH) in Tezpur, Sonitpur — one of India’s oldest mental health institutions established in 1876 — is marking its 150th anniversary. Patients visit the institute daily for treatment, and on this milestone the writer shares a personal account to highlight the hospital’s services and the continuing need to tackle stigma around mental illness.

As a child I had heard Tezpur’s hospital referred to as “pagla phatek,” a local, stigmatizing phrase for an asylum. That vague, fearful image stayed with me until I myself experienced a mental illness and wanted to learn more. My brother, Arghyadeep Baruah, encouraged me to go to the regional institute and helped arrange an introduction to senior psychologist Dr. Diptirup Choudhury.

My treatment began after an initial series of evaluations that took about three days for ancillary tests. Several doctors from different departments examined me in detail. After roughly 20–25 days I was told my diagnosis and my treatment commenced. The psychiatrist prescribed medication and the clinical psychologist provided therapy. The whole process requires time, but the most important point is that these services are free. Apart from a Rs.10 registration fee on my first visit, I incurred no costs.

Reflecting on why people once called the place “pagla phatek,” it is easy to see how stigma and lack of awareness shaped public perception 30 years ago. There was minimal understanding of mental illness then. Today I am careful with language, informed about my condition, receiving treatment, and have benefited significantly.

On LGBRIMH’s 150th anniversary, let this be a reminder: mental illness should not be taboo. Be aware, seek help when needed, and remember that specialized care is available — Tezpur is not far.
