Assam CM Targets AIMIM, Congress in High-Stakes Poll Push
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 4 accused AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi of “weaponising the Miya community” during a campaign visit to back the AIUDF, and criticised the Congress for remaining silent on such remarks as the state heads into elections. Sarma said Owaisi’s speeches were intended to mobilise particular sections of the population for political gain.
Sarma alleged that the Congress had effectively “brought Owaisi” into Assam to influence electoral dynamics and polarise voters along religious lines. He said the language used by visiting leaders showed a clear attempt to shape voter blocs rather than focus on governance issues.
Turning his fire on the Congress, the chief minister said the party had failed to condemn inflammatory statements and had stayed quiet on controversial incidents involving figures such as Yunus Tamuli and Yunus Ali. He framed the silence as tacit approval of polarising tactics at a time when communal sensitivities are high.
Reiterating his confidence about the BJP’s prospects, Sarma said the party was poised to win between 90 and 100 seats and could even cross the 100-mark. “We got 96 seats earlier, this time we will add four more,” he said, signalling expectations of electoral gains compared with the previous assembly results.
Speaking about the Khowang constituency, Sarma expressed certainty that BJP candidate Chakradhar Gogoi would secure a decisive victory, citing strong public response during a recent visit. He also criticised Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, alleging that the lawmaker had not been actively working for Jorhat over the past two years.
On the killing of a BJP leader in Sonari, Sarma said it was too early to link the incident to the election and that clarity would emerge only after a proper investigation. He emphasised that investigations should establish motive before drawing conclusions.
Sarma maintained that the BJP’s governance record and grassroots outreach had strengthened its position ahead of the polls, arguing that development and organisation-not polarisation-would determine the election outcome. The remarks underline the charged political atmosphere in Assam as parties contend for voter support in closely watched constituencies.
