Seventh Indian LPG Tanker Triumphantly Crosses Strait of Hormuz Amidst US-Iran War Chaos; 17 More Ships Await Rescue!

A seventh Indian LPG tanker, the Green Sanvi, successfully navigated the strategically important Strait of Hormuz on Friday, as reported by the Times of India. This milestone provides a welcome boost to India’s energy supply chain amidst rising concerns about potential shortages. Since tensions escalated between the U.S. and Iran, six other tankers-Shivalik, Nanda Devi, Jag Vasant, Pine Gas, BW Elm, and BW Tyr-have also traversed this crucial maritime corridor under close coordination with Iranian authorities, according to the Indian Express.

However, challenges persist, as 17 additional LPG vessels remain stranded west of the Strait, including Green Asha and Jag Vikram, which are expected to head toward India shortly. Concurrently, three other LPG carriers are drifting northeast of Abu Musa Island in the Persian Gulf, following orders from the Indian Navy while awaiting approval for their passage through the Strait.

The Green Sanvi is transporting approximately 44,000 tonnes of LPG, which equates to nearly half a day’s pre-conflict consumption for India. The ongoing geopolitical tensions have severely disrupted up to 90% of the country’s LPG imports, exacerbating supply constraints and putting pressure on a nation that relies on international markets for nearly 60% of its LPG and half of its natural gas needs.

In light of the heightened risks, tankers traversing the Strait are adopting additional precautions, including disclosing their identity and nationality to prevent misidentification. Like its predecessors, the Green Sanvi avoided the central shipping lane, opting for a longer route between Iran’s Larak and Qeshm islands.

Iran has communicated to the International Maritime Organization that “non-hostile” nations-including India-can continue transiting the Strait of Hormuz, provided they adhere to specific safety protocols and maintain coordination with Iranian authorities. Meanwhile, vessels associated with the U.S. and its allies face ongoing restrictions in the region.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have intensified, particularly following Iran’s rejection of a proposed 48-hour ceasefire mediated by several countries, including Pakistan. This escalation has seen Iranian forces reportedly down two U.S. fighter jets, underscoring the fraught atmosphere surrounding maritime navigation through the Strait as the conflict advances into its fifth week.

As India navigates these complex geopolitical waters, the successful transit of the Green Sanvi is a timely reminder of the critical importance of maintaining energy supplies while ensuring maritime safety.
