Assam Polling Teams Brave Rain to Ensure Home Voting in Kamrup
Polling teams deployed across Kamrup district carried out home voting for eligible electors amid persistent rainfall, covering all six Legislative Assembly Constituencies ahead of the Assam Assembly polls. Election officials said the door-to-door exercise was part of preparations for polling scheduled on April 9, 2026, for the district, with counting set for May 4, 2026.
A total of 31 polling teams were mobilised to facilitate voting at the residences of electors entitled to home voting under Section 60(c) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The provision allows senior citizens above 85 years of age and persons with disabilities (PwDs) listed in the electoral rolls to cast their votes by postal ballot from home.
Despite incessant rain, teams negotiated difficult terrain, waterlogged stretches and disrupted access routes to reach vulnerable voters across the district. Officials said the exercise followed prescribed guidelines to protect the secrecy and integrity of the voting process.
Among those who voted at home was 109-year-old Soromoti Mahanta of Palashbari LAC; several other elderly voters, including centenarians, also used the facility. Polling personnel reported that the operation was completed successfully despite weather-related logistical challenges.
Authorities described the initiative as a measure to improve voter accessibility and participation among senior citizens and persons with disabilities ahead of the Assam Legislative Assembly elections.
