Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited a tea garden in Dibrugarh, Assam, on April 1, 2026, ahead of two scheduled election rallies in the state, highlighting the economic and cultural importance of Assam’s tea industry. The visit, part of a day of campaigning, included interactions with women workers at the estate and a series of photographs and posts shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Posting on X on April 1, 2026, Modi wrote: “Tea is the soul of Assam! The tea from here has reached across the world. This morning in Dibrugarh, I visited a tea garden and interacted with the women working here. It was a very memorable experience,” and later added that the government and people are “very proud of the efforts of every tea garden family.” He also posted a selfie with women workers and additional images from the visit.

Modi’s remarks emphasized the role of tea garden families in building Assam’s reputation globally, framing their labour and perseverance as a point of state pride. The posts were accompanied by photographs meant to underscore his on-ground engagement with local communities ahead of the polls.

Context for the visit: according to the Assam State Portal, the state produces roughly 630–700 million kilograms of tea annually, accounting for more than half of India’s total tea output. The tea sector remains a major pillar of Assam’s economy and employment, particularly in districts such as Dibrugarh.

As part of his April 1 itinerary, Modi was scheduled to address a rally at Gogamukh in Dhemaji at 11:00 a.m. and a second public meeting in Biswanath district around 1:00 p.m., with senior BJP leaders and state ministers expected to attend. At the Dhemaji rally he planned to campaign for BJP candidates Ranoj Pegu and Naba Kumar Doley (Dhemaji and Dhakuakha constituencies), and later to extend support to former minister Pallab Lochan Das in Behali.

Assam is set to vote for all 126 assembly seats on April 9, 2026, with counting scheduled for May 4, 2026; results will be declared alongside those for Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala and Puducherry. The BJP-led NDA has governed Assam since its first state assembly victory there in 2016.
