Historic Leadership: Justice Tashi Rabstan, Ladakh’s Pride, Takes Charge as Meghalaya High Court’s First Chief Justice – A New Dawn for Northeast News
SHILLONG: Justice Tashi Rabstan has been nominated as the new Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, following the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation. This decision comes in the wake of the impending retirement of the current Chief Justice S Vaidyanathan, who is set to retire on August 24.
Justice Rabstan, presently the senior-most judge at the High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, will be the first Chief Justice from the Ladakh region. The Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, emphasized the historic significance of this appointment, citing the lack of representation from Ladakh in the High Courts and the office of Chief Justice until now.
Born on April 10, 1963, in Skurbuchan, Leh Ladakh, Justice Rabstan completed his legal education at the University of Jammu. He began his career in law by joining the Bar Council of Jammu & Kashmir in 1990, focusing his practice mainly at the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
In March 2013, Justice Rabstan was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court, achieving permanent judge status by May 2014. His judicial career is highlighted by his tenure as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in 2022.
The Supreme Court Collegium’s resolution underscores Justice Rabstan’s distinguished career and substantial contributions to the judiciary. It affirms his experience and seniority, perfectly positioning him to take on the role of Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
His appointment marks a significant milestone, bringing representation to a previously underrepresented region in the judiciary. His vast legal acumen, combined with his tenure in various judicial capacities, is expected to contribute positively to the Meghalaya High Court.
