NPMHR Urges National Unity After Tragic ‘Fratricide’ Incident
The Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) said it was “shocked and deeply pained” by the reported killing of four Naga Army officers in Hongbei village, describing the incident as a “heinous act” and alleging the victims were killed by fellow comrades. The organisation said the reasons for the killings are not yet known and urged restraint and unity across the Naga community.
In a press statement the NPMHR called killing “a human disgrace” and said “any act of fratricide is tragic and an abject social disgrace and shame.” The group warned that such violence undermines ongoing non‑violent efforts by Nagas to defend their homeland and political rights.
The NPMHR also accused external forces of negatively influencing Naga society, saying divisive measures-sometimes presented as development or economic initiatives-are being used to fragment the social fabric. “Such ‘killings’ are yet another manifestation of the impact of the narratives of the adversaries,” the statement said, adding that these actors are “absolutely focused on destroying us” and have “deviously polluted our minds leading us to destroy each other.”
Appealing for calm, the NPMHR urged all sections of the community to uphold a “humane sense” and stand together against forces that seek to divide the Naga people. It conveyed “profound grief” and condolences to the families of the deceased.
According to news reports, the incident occurred in Hongbei village on Saturday and the cadres involved were said to be members of the “NSCN Eastern Flank.” The killings were followed reportedly by the torching on Sunday of an office in Manipur’s Ukhrul that was alleged to have been used by NSCN (IM), an act attributed to “an irate mob.”
