Mayawati Triumphs: Celebrates Bold Stand by Delhi University VC to Reject ‘Manusmriti’ from Law Syllabus, Championing Equality
On July 12, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati applauded the Delhi University Vice Chancellor’s decision to reject a proposal to include ‘Manusmriti’ in the Law Faculty syllabus. She highlighted that the strong opposition was warranted, as the ancient text contradicts the principles of the Indian Constitution, crafted by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar to uphold egalitarian and welfare objectives.
In a social media post on platform X, Ms. Mayawati emphasized that the Manusmriti does not align with the values enshrined in the Constitution, which prioritizes the dignity of marginalized communities and women, along with humanism and secularism. She condemned any effort to integrate the Manusmriti into academic programs as inappropriate.
Delhi University Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh formally announced the rejection of the proposal, which sought to introduce the Laws of Manu from the Hindu Dharmastra literary tradition into the LLB curriculum. Prof. Singh clarified that while some faculty members suggested changes in the jurisprudence chapter, the Academic Council, the authoritative body, did not endorse the proposal.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also commented, affirming the government’s commitment to the Constitution and its futuristic vision. He noted that any inclusion of controversial content would not be considered, reflecting the administration’s dedication to preserving the integrity and spirit of the Constitution. The prompt rejection of the Manusmriti proposal signifies a collective commitment to constitutional values and equality.
