Assam Rifles Thwart Smuggling Attempt, Seize Massive Areca Nut Consignment in Manipur
Guwahati: In a significant interdiction, the Assam Rifles have successfully foiled yet another smuggling operation, seizing a substantial consignment of areca nuts within three days in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district.
The paramilitary force, during two separate operations in Machi and Khampang Khullen areas, confiscated 28.2 tonnes of areca nuts valued at Rs 2.5 crore in the international market. Six individuals allegedly involved in the trafficking were apprehended during these operations. The seized areca nuts have been handed over to the customs department, while the suspects are in police custody in Machi and Tengnoupal for further investigation and legal proceedings.
This operation follows a significant seizure earlier on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, in Manipur’s Chandel district, where Assam Rifles troops confiscated a staggering 61.2 tonnes of areca nuts worth Rs 5.29 crore in the grey market.
Smuggling of areca nuts, also known as betel nuts, from Myanmar to India is rampant due to the porous borders of Manipur and Mizoram. Despite their harmful effects, these nuts are widely chewed across many parts of India. Once smuggled into the country, the nuts are transported to various regions through multimodal routes.
To combat this issue, a high-level probe was initiated in 2021 to address the smuggling of areca nuts from neighboring countries. Nonetheless, the illegal trade persists unabated through the northeastern states’ porous borders.
