Zero Vehicle Day at MOP Vaishnav College: A Green Initiative

In an effort to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability, MOP Vaishnav College for Women in Chennai launched its first Zero Vehicle Day on August 28, with plans to observe this initiative on the last Thursday of every month. On this day, students, faculty, and non-teaching staff opted for public transportation, e-vehicles, shared autorickshaws, bicycles, or even walking to campus. Notably, MOP Principal Archna Prasad walked three kilometers from home to college, setting an example for the campus community.

The initiative, orchestrated by the Student Ministry of Environment under the M.O.P. Sansad student council, aims to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and encourage physical activity. In preparation, student groups made announcements through public address systems, social media, and even organized a flash mob. The campaign also involved distributing information about bus routes and ensuring guests adhered to the no-vehicle policy.

“We plan to observe No Vehicle Day on the last Thursday of each month, or an alternate day if necessary, to sustain this push for environmental consciousness,” said Principal Archna Prasad. With nearly 4000 students, the college typically sees 800 two-wheelers and 20 cars on campus daily. The administration intends to study the initiative’s impact over time to gauge its effectiveness.

Beyond this, the college undertakes several sustainability measures, including harnessing 45 KW of solar energy from rooftop panels and maintaining a plastic-free campus. Instead of floral bouquets for guests, the institution has adopted the practice of planting trees in partnership with a tree-plantation agency. Guests can even track the growth of their dedicated tree via a QR code-enabled video stream.

The inaugural Zero Vehicle Day involved proactive planning, such as coordinating the early delivery of routine supplies and garnering guest cooperation. This initiative is a testament to the college’s commitment to environmental stewardship, reflecting the green aspirations of its current generation of students.
