BJP Fiercely Retorts to Tejashwi Yadav’s ‘Chinese Yogi’ Insult Amid Boiling Assam Namaz Break Controversy
GUWAHATI: The BJP has taken strong exception to RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav’s recent comment labeling Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as the “Chinese version of Yogi Adityanath.” Yadav’s remark was in reaction to the Assam assembly’s contentious decision to eliminate a two-hour break for Muslim lawmakers to offer namaz, igniting fresh controversy.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla sharply criticized Yadav, questioning the rationale behind the jibe. Poonawalla condemned the comment as disrespectful and divisive, suggesting Yadav called Sarma a “Chinese version” solely due to his Assamese origin. He also hinted at the involvement of the INDI alliance in showing disrespect to the Constitution.
Poonawalla cited Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, aimed at promoting national unity, and questioned the sincerity of such efforts given Yadav’s divisive statement. He urged Gandhi and Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi to clarify their stance on continuing their alliance with the RJD following such remarks, implying that Yadav’s statement undermines the unity message of the Congress party.
The controversy erupted after the Assam assembly unanimously decided to scrap the two-hour break allowed for Muslim legislators to attend Jumma prayers. The decision, approved by the assembly’s Rules Committee and endorsed by all members, including Muslim MLAs, was defended by CM Sarma. He cited the unanimous agreement among legislators and dismissed external backlash, emphasizing the commitment of Assamese lawmakers to national development over divisive practices.
CM Sarma stressed that no Muslim MLAs objected to the decision, reflecting a broad consensus within the assembly. He criticized the backlash from outside Assam, reinforcing that legislators within the state prioritize national progress above religious divisions.
