Officials stressed that the Strait of Hormuz is an international sea lane where the right of navigation is preserved for all. Indian commercial vessels have not been barred from using the route, the government added, though maritime and shipping companies have been advised to follow security precautions and standard operating practices. The statement noted the economic stakes: a significant share of India’s crude oil imports passes through this channel, making its safe and open operation crucial for the national economy.
The clarification follows international concern after a period of heightened tensions in the region, which prompted questions about control and safety in the strait, particularly amid frictions between Iran and several Western countries. To reduce risks to Indian shipping, the government said it is closely monitoring developments and has deployed naval patrol vessels to help ensure safe transit for Indian merchant ships. New Delhi expressed hope that the navy’s presence will help protect India’s commercial interests at sea.
Citing international maritime norms, officials pointed out that states cannot lawfully prevent other countries’ civilian ships from passing through such key waterways unless those vessels pose a concrete threat to the coastal state’s security.
