Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cabinet minister and sitting Haflong MLA Nandita Gorlosa joined the Indian National Congress in Assam on March 22. The induction was held in Haflong in the presence of Congress Haflong candidate Nirmal Langthasa, who is an APCC general secretary.
Gorlosa’s switch follows the BJP’s decision not to field her in this year’s elections, when the party instead named Rupali Langthasa as its candidate for the seat. The change in ticketing prompted speculation about Gorlosa’s political future and appears to have been the immediate cause of her move to the Congress.
According to Congress leaders present, Gorlosa is expected to take over the party’s candidature in Haflong from Nirmal Langthasa, though there has been no official confirmation yet from the Congress on a formal ticket transfer. Party sources described her joining as a significant boost to Congress prospects in the constituency ahead of the polls.
Gorlosa’s omission from the BJP candidate list drew widespread attention because she serves as a minister in the incumbent Assam cabinet. Party leaders in the state have acknowledged that several sitting legislators were denied tickets this election cycle, with the Chief Minister saying the party aimed to introduce new faces in its lineup.
