The Tambaram City police on Saturday, August 31, 2024, conducted a significant raid on flats near SRM College in Potheri, primarily housing college students. Acting on intelligence that students were reportedly using drugs, Police Commissioner Abhin Dinesh Modak authorized the operation. Supervised by Additional Commissioner C. Mageswari, the operation saw the involvement of Deputy Commissioners from Tambaram, Pallikaranai, and Traffic divisions.
The coordinated raid involved around 1,000 police officers, including personnel from the Armed Reserve and women police units. The officers searched approximately 500 flats and surrounding areas from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., uncovering various narcotics. The illicit substances seized included ganja, ganja chocolate, ganja oil, smoking pots, hookah machines, and shisha (hookah powder).
Additionally, the police apprehended a history-sheeter, G. Selvamani, aged 29, from Guduvanchery. Classified as an A+ category rowdy, Selvamani was found in possession of 2 kilograms of ganja and a knife.
The raid, which forms part of a broader crackdown on drug use among students, underscores the police’s commitment to curbing narcotic activities in educational hubs.
