The United States has imposed sanctions on a global financial network it says is linked to Hezbollah, designating 16 individuals and entities and blocking their U.S.-based assets to disrupt alleged fundraising and money‑laundering that supports the group’s finance apparatus. The move, announced by the State Department and the Treasury, targets companies and projects operating across the Middle East, Europe and North America and aims to curb revenue streams the U.S. says finance terrorism.
“Today, the United States is imposing sanctions to disrupt a global financial network that supports Hizballah (Hezbollah),” Tommy Pigott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, said in a statement. Pigott said the action targets people and firms “involved in laundering and raising funds for Hizballah’s finance team” and that cutting off these channels will limit the group’s ability to generate revenue and evade sanctions.
The statement also accused Hezbollah of prioritizing violence on behalf of the Iranian regime over the safety of the Lebanese people, saying the group “continues to spend millions of dollars on terrorism,” leaving civilians to suffer the consequences. The announcement said the “Trump Administration” is taking decisive steps to disrupt the group’s ability to threaten U.S. and regional security.
A separate Treasury Department release said the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is designating a network led by Hezbollah financier and former public investment official Alaa Hassan Hamieh. According to the Treasury, Hamieh oversees a web of companies-controlled through family members and close associates-that launder and raise funds for Hezbollah’s finance team.
Those designated are linked to projects and entities in Lebanon, Syria, Poland, Slovenia, Qatar and Canada and are estimated to have enabled the diversion of more than USD 100 million since 2020, the Treasury said. “Iran is the head of the snake when it comes to global terrorism,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, adding that Hezbollah diverts funds “that rightfully belong to the Lebanese people” to finance terrorist operations.
Under the action, all property and interests in property of the designated persons that are in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons are blocked and must be reported to OFAC. Entities owned, directly or indirectly, 50 percent or more by blocked persons are also blocked. Unless authorised by OFAC, U.S. persons and transactions in the United States involving blocked property are generally prohibited.
