United for Justice: Khilanjia Oikya Mancha Formed by 14 Indigenous Groups in Lakhimpur to Safeguard Local Rights and Heritage
Lakhimpur: Indigenous Organizations Unite for Protection of Native Communities
In response to the recent Sivasagar incident, 14 indigenous community organizations in Lakhimpur have united to form Khilanjia Oikya Mancha, a common platform aimed at protecting indigenous rights. The leaders announced this initiative during a press conference at the North Lakhimpur Press Club on Friday.
Key figures present included Ajit Buragohain, Rupanka Borah of Veer Lachit Sena, Dipak Borah, Mridul Saikia of AKRSU, and others from various student and youth unions, demonstrating wide-ranging community support. Ajit Buragohain, the Chief Convener, emphasized the forum’s mission to secure the rights of Assam’s ethnic communities. He called for the government to grant land pattas to indigenous people in tribal areas, establish a consistent land policy to prevent outsiders from purchasing land in these regions, and ensure indigenous representation in the Lok Sabha.
Buragohain criticized organizations not representing Assamese interests and stated that only indigenous individuals should have opportunities to represent the community in national assemblies. He also asserted that local employment should be prioritized, urging companies to hire local workers over outsiders.
Other forum representatives demanded the end of fish imports from Nagaon, the granting of tribal status to six Assamese communities, and the removal of encroachments on government land. They warned of stringent measures to protect indigenous interests.
This united front signifies a firm stand by indigenous communities in Lakhimpur to safeguard their rights and ensure the prosperity of local populations.
