Akhil-Gaurav Gogoi Alliance Upends Assam: Congress Allots 11 Seats
Akhil Gogoi’s Raijor Dal and the Indian National Congress, led in the state by APCC chief and MP Gaurav Gogoi, have finalised a seat-sharing pact ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly polls, with Congress allocating 11 constituencies to Raijor Dal in a major step toward opposition unity. The agreement names Sivasagar, Dalgaon, Dhing, Sissiborgaon, Digboi, Bokakhat, Manas, Tezpur, Kaliabor, Margherita and Mariani for Raijor Dal to contest.
Goalpara East and Gauripur have been designated as “friendly contest” seats, where both parties will field candidates. The arrangement follows talks initiated by Gaurav Gogoi to broaden the opposition front; he had earlier said time was short but expressed optimism about reaching a consensus and indicated the final proposal would be placed before the party’s central leadership for approval.
The Congress already stands allied in Assam with the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation (CPIML), and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC). Party leaders view the Raijor Dal agreement as a strategic move to consolidate anti-incumbency votes against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
With seat-sharing largely settled between Congress and Raijor Dal, the opposition’s electoral front in Assam is taking clearer shape as parties race to build a broader coalition ahead of the high-stakes 2026 Assembly elections.
