The Tripura State Election Commission told the Supreme Court of India in a sworn affidavit that the entire Village Council election process for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) — from voting to declaration of results — will be completed by the end of June 2026. The apex court, which heard the matter on Wednesday, accepted the commission’s schedule and set the next hearing for May 20, 2026, while indicating that the Village Council polls will be conducted under its supervision.
A bench comprising Justice Manoj Mishra and Justice Manmohan heard two related matters concerning the TTAADC: the long-pending Village Council elections and a separate petition about bills of the District Council that remain unacted on by the state government. The petition on delayed polls was brought by Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, founder of the Tipra Motha Party.
Advocate Bhaskar Debbarma told reporters the court accepted the Election Commission’s affidavit outlining the proposed timeline and procedural safeguards. The May 20, 2026 hearing will review progress toward completing the election process by the end of June 2026 and the court signalled it would oversee the conduct of the elections.
In a connected development, the Supreme Court admitted a writ petition filed by the TTAADC over pending bills and is expected to issue notices to the respondents, keeping the matter before the court for further direction.
Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma welcomed the court’s move, noting that Village Council elections will be held after nearly a decade and thanking the Supreme Court for what he described as “long‑awaited justice for the Tiprasa people.” The court’s timetable and supervisory role mark a critical step toward restoring local democratic processes and addressing outstanding administrative and financial issues in the TTAADC.
