The couple had been experiencing severe marital discord, mainly stemming from Rafique’s frequent work-related travels to Bengaluru and his accusations of Ruby engaging in an extra-marital affair.

Ruby, a mother of three, had earlier moved to her parents’ house in Rajnagar village to escape Rafique’s incessant allegations. However, she returned to Jamalpur after a temporary reconciliation. Despite this, Rafique’s distrust did not abate, leading to a grievous confrontation on the day of the assault. In a fit of rage during a heated argument, Rafique used a sharp weapon to mutilate Ruby’s hands before fleeing the scene.

Neighbors, alerted by Ruby’s and her children’s screams, rushed to her aid. They promptly informed Ruby’s family, who then transported her to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
