Exciting News: Poba to be Declared Wildlife Sanctuary Soon, Proclaims Assam Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary – Northeast News
GUWAHATI: The Poba Reserve Forest in Assam’s Dhemaji district is set to be designated as a wildlife sanctuary, announced Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary in response to a zero-hour notice by MLA Bhuban Pegu in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Friday.
The establishment of the Poba Wildlife Sanctuary reflects the state government’s commitment to preserving and sustainably developing Assam’s natural resources and biodiversity, a goal consistently championed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This new sanctuary will cover 257.29 sq. km, including the Poba Reserve Forest, Kabu Chapri Proposed Reserve Forest, and adjacent riverine areas.
Poba Reserve Forest, a biodiverse rainforest in northeastern Assam, is noted for its rich wildlife and serves as a crucial migratory route for various species, especially elephants. This forest connects the D’ Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary, Kabu Chapri Proposed Reserve Forest, and Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and is one of two significant elephant migration routes across the Brahmaputra River, alongside the Panpur-Kaziranga route. Herds of 70-80 elephants frequently migrate through this area, with male elephants using it year-round.
Beyond its significance for wildlife, Poba Reserve Forest is home to various arboreal species like the slow loris and capped langur, and mammals such as the wild boar. Additionally, it shelters around 45 species of birds and reptiles, while the confluence of the Siang and Lohit rivers supports diverse fish species. The forest is also celebrated for its variety of orchids, attracting nature enthusiasts and researchers.
This move to declare Poba a wildlife sanctuary underscores Assam’s ongoing efforts to protect its ecological treasures and sustain its biodiversity for future generations.
