Unlock Today’s Best LPG Cylinder Prices: Discover the Latest Rates for Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, and More-Don’t Miss Out!
Commercial and domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders in India are currently facing significant supply disruptions, primarily due to halted trade in the Strait of Hormuz amidst ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. With India depending on imports for approximately 60% of its domestic LPG requirements and 90% of those imports coming through this crucial waterway, the impact is being felt nationwide.
To mitigate the situation, prices for both domestic and commercial LPG cylinders have increased. Last week, the cost of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder surged by ₹60, while the 19-kg commercial variant saw a hike of ₹114.5. Despite these changes, prices for LPG cylinders distributed under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana-targeted at supporting low-income households with over 10 crore connections-remain unchanged, as reported by PTI.
In major urban centers such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata, the disruptions have particularly affected the hospitality sector. Many restaurants have been forced to adjust their menus or shut down entirely, with several eateries opting to stop serving meat dishes that require more cooking time and fuel. Panic buying has surged among consumers, with reports of a nearly 60% increase in purchases last Friday as people rushed to secure their supplies.
To address the ongoing supply issues, the government initiated the distribution of commercial LPG to states and Union Territories on Saturday. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, confirmed the decision, stating, “After extensive discussions, the government has decided that commercial consumers will also get LPG. Commercial cylinder distribution has been started in various states, and consumers have started receiving them.”
Additionally, the government has requested households that have both piped natural gas (PNG) connections and LPG subscriptions to give up their LPG cylinders and refrain from refilling them from public oil companies or their distributors. This step is aimed at optimizing resources during this critical time.
Amid these challenges, there is a glimmer of hope as two India-flagged LPG tankers have successfully transited through the Strait of Hormuz and are en route to India, with their arrival anticipated to help alleviate some of the pressure on the domestic market.
As the situation develops, both consumers and businesses remain on high alert, closely monitoring price changes and supply updates. The disruptions underline India’s reliance on imported fuels and the vulnerabilities associated with geopolitical unrest, emphasizing the need for diversification and resilience in the energy sector.
The ongoing developments surrounding LPG supply and pricing continue to reflect the broader implications of global trade dynamics and domestic energy policies, raising important questions about India’s energy security in an increasingly interconnected world.
