Transformative Training & Awareness Programme: Essential Insights
Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Udalguri, organised a training‑cum‑awareness programme on the registration of farmers’ varieties under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPV&FRA) on Wednesday, drawing 100 farmers from the district. The event aimed to guide growers through the registration process and raise awareness about preserving traditional crop diversity.
During the programme, farmers handed over samples of local crop varieties, collected directly for submission toward PPV&FRA registration. A small exhibition of indigenous varieties was also staged, providing participants an opportunity to display and discuss the diversity of traditional crops preserved in the area.
The session saw active participation from scientists Dr Nishita Pathak, Dr Priyanka Borah, Bikash Nagaria, Dr Pradip Rajbangshi, and Kapil Deb Nath, who contributed technical guidance and practical steps for preparing and documenting varieties for registration.
The PPV&FRA offers a legal framework to recognise and protect plant varieties and farmers’ rights; registering local varieties can help secure formal recognition, support conservation efforts, and potentially open avenues for benefit-sharing. Organisers said the initiative was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen on-farm conservation and empower farmers with knowledge of intellectual‑property-related processes affecting traditional crops.
