Partial Curfew Lift Brings Cautious Relief to Garo Hills, Meghalaya
Authorities on March 13, 2026 partially relaxed a curfew in two violence-affected districts of Meghalaya to allow residents to buy essential commodities, officials said. In West Garo Hills the curfew was eased for four hours, from 9 am to 1 pm, while neighbouring East Garo Hills saw a longer relaxation from 8 am to 5 pm under an order issued by Deputy Commissioner R.P. Marak.
The restrictions had been imposed earlier this week after clashes broke out between tribal and non-tribal groups during the nomination process for elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). The disturbances prompted a swift security response as authorities sought to restore order.
Two persons were killed in police firing during the unrest, and parts of Tura suffered damage from arson, vandalism and looting, officials said. Following the violence, the Army was deployed in sensitive areas to prevent further escalation and assist local security forces.
The state government has postponed the GHADC elections that had been scheduled for April 10, 2026. Officials described the situation in the affected areas as tense but under control, with security forces maintaining a close watch.
During the limited curfew relaxation, authorities urged residents to remain peaceful and avoid any actions that could disturb public order. Officials warned that strict action would be taken under relevant legal provisions against anyone found violating the restrictions.
