Bangladesh Triumphs: Historic Maiden Series Win Over Afridi-less Pakistan Sparks National Euphoria
Rawalpindi: Bangladesh Eyes Historic Series Win, Pakistan Bounces Back with Changes
Bangladesh is poised to secure its first-ever Test-series victory over Pakistan, as the second Test begins in Rawalpindi on Friday. Star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi will be absent, sidelined to spend time with his new-born son, following his struggle for form in the previous match. Bangladesh delivered a decisive 10-wicket victory in the first Test, marking their first win in over 14 encounters against Pakistan.
Pakistan’s recent performances have been underwhelming, highlighted by an early exit from the T20 World Cup and a series whitewash on their tour to Australia. Head coach Jason Gillespie, in his first series with Pakistan, emphasized strategic changes and has reinstated spinner Abrar Ahmed after an all-pace attack failed in the first Test.
Gillespie acknowledged the challenge of squaring the series but remains optimistic. "We want to go out there and play positive," he said, focusing on aggressive batting and a merciless bowling strategy. He also stood by the under-pressure captain Shan Masood, who managed only six and 14 runs in the first match and has lost all four of his Tests as captain. "Shan is a very positive captain. He wants to play and win games… We showed that with our intent in the first game but it didn’t quite work out, credit to our opposition," Gillespie noted.
The team aims to reset and concentrate on the upcoming match, hoping to overturn the series in their favor. Both teams also faced penalties in the World Test Championship for a slow over-rate in the first Test.
