Triumphant Return: Firefly Aerospace’s Alpha Rocket Soars to Orbit in Historic First Launch After Setbacks (Watch Now)
Texas-based Firefly Aerospace is celebrating a significant milestone after successfully launching its Alpha rocket on March 11, 2026, for the first time in nearly a year. The mission, dubbed “Stairway to Seven,” marked the seventh flight for the Alpha rocket, which previously faced major setbacks in 2025. During the “Message in a Booster” mission in April, an anomaly during stage separation prevented the rocket from delivering a technology-demonstrating satellite for Lockheed Martin to orbit. Later, in September, a catastrophic explosion occurred during prelaunch tests for “Stairway to Seven,” necessitating extensive investigations and the readiness of another booster.
An internal review identified the cause of the test-stand explosion—”a process error during stage one integration” leading to hydrocarbon contamination-which ruled out any design flaws in the rocket. With this knowledge, Firefly Aerospace decided to reframe the “Stairway to Seven” mission as a test flight. The original payload was replaced, and the focus shifted to achieving optimal performance in both the first and second stages of flight.
Liftoff occurred from Space Launch Complex-2 at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 8:50 p.m. ET (00:50 GMT on March 12). The mission proceeded smoothly, with Alpha executing first-stage separation approximately 2 minutes and 40 seconds after launch. As the main booster was jettisoned, the upper stage continued its precise trajectory toward orbit. After the fairing was ejected 30 seconds later, Alpha’s upper-stage engine was cut off approximately eight minutes post-launch, successfully reaching orbit at an altitude of 151 miles (243 kilometers).
In a notable move, Firefly Aerospace plans to retire the Alpha’s Block I configuration following this successful launch. Looking ahead, the company is focused on enhancing its launch vehicle’s capabilities, with the Block II configuration expected to debut on Flight 8. This upgraded version will be about 7 feet taller than its predecessor and will feature advanced avionics and power systems, alongside improved thermal protections.
The “Stairway to Seven” mission not only marked a successful requalification flight but also served to “test and validate key systems” in preparation for Block II. Despite facing challenges, Firefly has shown resilience; its uncrewed Blue Ghost moon lander made history by becoming the first private spacecraft to achieve a successful lunar landing. However, the Alpha rocket has completed full mission success in only three of its seven orbital launch attempts.
