Elon Musk Slams Brazil’s Top Judge: Starlink in Jeopardy and X Faces Dire Ban
Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla and owner of X Corp. (previously Twitter), escalated his attacks on Brazilian Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes amid rising legal and political tensions. Musk criticized de Moraes on social media, which follows a directive from the court requiring X to appoint a legal representative in Brazil or face suspension. X Corp. plans to release de Moraes’ demands and related court filings, deeming them illegal.
De Moraes mandated freezing Starlink’s financial assets in Brazil to ensure payment of fines imposed due to X Corp.’s non-compliance with Brazilian law, which requires social networks to employ local representatives for handling government takedown requests about political misinformation. Starlink, a satellite internet service under SpaceX, is affected by this financial freeze.
Musk decried these actions as unconstitutional, asserting the measures lacked due process. Brazil’s Supreme Court is also probing Musk and X Corp. for allegedly obstructing justice and involvement in digital militias spreading misinformation. The U.S. House Judiciary Committee has subpoenaed X Corp. for records concerning Brazilian court orders on content moderation. The tension is heightened as Brazil prepares for municipal elections, where misinformation laws play a crucial role.
