Lurinjyoti Gogoi Fires Back at ‘Imported Leader’ Remark
On March 8, 2026, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) chief Lurinjyoti Gogoi issued a sharp rebuttal to remarks by some Congress workers who labelled him an “imported leader” and an “outsider,” defending his political legitimacy and stressing the need for a united opposition to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam.
The controversy began after several leaders from the Indian National Congress and members of the ruling party allegedly referred to Gogoi as an “imported leader” and an “outsider.” Reacting to those comments, Gogoi questioned their premise, asking: “Can a person from Assam become an outsider in Assam?” He said such labels were not merely personal attacks but an affront to the sentiments and dignity of the Assamese people.
Tensions rose further when a section of Congress workers reportedly burned Gogoi’s effigy in protest. Responding to the incident, the AJP president said he harboured no regret over his actions and framed the demonstration as symbolic. “They have not burned my effigy; they have burned the sentiments of the people of Assam,” Gogoi said, adding that the public would ultimately respond in its own way.
Beyond the immediate row, Gogoi addressed broader opposition strategy in the state, expressing optimism about the possibility of a united front. On prospects of an alliance with Akhil Gogoi, president of the Raijor Dal, he said: “An alliance is both necessary and desirable. From my side, the door is open,” and indicated that discussions between the two leaders were ongoing.
Reiterating the importance of consolidated opposition to mount an effective challenge to the BJP in forthcoming elections, Gogoi alleged attempts to derail such a coalition were being driven by forces acting as “agents of the BJP.” He also urged people to place faith in the leadership of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to play a constructive role in facilitating opposition unity in Assam.
