New York, Aug 29: The Indian diaspora and Americans nationwide are eagerly seeking to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s community reception, surpassing the New York venue’s capacity, according to event organizers.
Avinash Gupta, President of the tri-state chapter of the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), highlighted the high enthusiasm for the September 22 event. "We have received over 25,000 ticket requests from 42 states and are considering how to accommodate as many as possible," Gupta told IANS.
The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which can seat 18,000, will have additional temporary seating to increase capacity, he said. Registrations are open until noon on September 1, with passes distributed via a lottery system. For those unable to attend, the event will be simulcast on giant screens in Times Square and Edison, New Jersey.
Approximately 560 organizations are co-sponsoring the reception, organized by the Indo-American Community of USA (IACU) under the motto, “Modi and US, Progress Together.” Gupta emphasized that the event celebrates the Indian diaspora’s achievements and strengthens US-India ties through people-to-people connections.
Cultural programs showcasing India’s diversity and heritage will precede Modi’s expected appearance around noon (9:30 PM IST). The arena, home to the Nets basketball team, is in Uniondale, about 50 km from Manhattan. Buses are being arranged to bring attendees from New York, Washington, and Boston.
In contrast to the 2019 “Howdy Modi” event in Houston, former President Donald Trump and other US politicians will not participate due to the upcoming elections. This marks a departure from Modi’s previous US community events in 2014 and 2015. Last June, Modi participated in International Yoga Day exercises at the United Nations.
