Urgent Call to Action: CM Naidu Demands Swift Execution of Key Irrigation Projects, Empowering the Polavaram Vision
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has underscored the critical importance of quality control in the construction of the Polavaram project, during a review meeting with officials from the Water Resources Department (WRD) on the night of March 6, 2026. He urged the department to provide timely updates on the project while emphasizing that there must be no compromise in maintaining construction standards or technical specifications.
In his address, Naidu instructed that the project be implemented in a manner that aligns with both state and central expectations, avoiding any potential criticisms from the Center. He stressed the necessity of receiving constant feedback from international experts visiting the site, aiming to align the project’s development with their recommendations.
Further, the Chief Minister announced a commitment to keep central officials informed about the state’s schedule for the construction of the multi-purpose project. To enhance accountability, he plans to hold monthly review meetings to track progress.
One of Naidu’s immediate priorities is the completion of the Polavaram Left Main Canal, specifically ensuring it reaches Meghadrigedda in Visakhapatnam district without delay. He highlighted the urgent need for finishing the construction of the Diaphragm Wall (D-Wall) by the end of this month, and he called for focused efforts on the rehabilitation of families affected by the project, particularly as water storage is planned to reach 41.15 meters.
Naidu noted that in spite of expert recommendations to repair the existing D-Wall, the state government opted to construct a new one to prioritize public safety. He expressed the need for the action plan aimed at completing the Polavaram project and various initiatives in Rayalaseema and the northern coastal districts to be meticulously followed.
In addition, he ordered the acceleration of the Veligonda and North Andhra projects, cautioning officials to avoid funding issues by coordinating effectively with the Finance Department. He also requested expedited clearances for the Polavaram-Nallamala Sagar Link project to allow for an earlier start of construction efforts. Repairs and maintenance of lift irrigation projects should be conducted using the Hybrid Annuity Mode, he added.
In attendance at the meeting were Water Resources Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu, Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad, and Special Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister K. Vijayanand, all of whom are pivotal in ensuring the progress and success of these vital infrastructure projects in Andhra Pradesh.
Naidu’s proactive stance on the Polavaram project and related initiatives reflects a commitment not only to infrastructure development but also to the welfare of those affected by such large-scale projects in the region. As the state moves forward, the emphasis on quality construction and timely implementation will be critical in achieving the ambitious goals set for Andhra Pradesh’s water resource management.
