Nagaland Sees Over 100 Arrests Linked to Insurgent Groups Amid Ceasefire Violations
Kohima, August 29: Amid rising ceasefire violations in Nagaland, Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton reported to the Legislative Assembly on Thursday that since January 2024, authorities have detained at least 106 individuals associated with various Naga insurgent factions. Among these arrests, 25 are related to abduction or kidnapping incidents and 26 pertain to Arms Act violations.
The detained individuals include members from multiple insurgent groups: eight from NNC (FGN), seven from NSCN (IM), six from NSCN-K (Khango), and four from NSCN-K (Nikki). Despite the persistent unrest, Patton assured lawmakers that the crime situation in Nagaland remains under control. Police registered 724 cases from January to June 2024, a significant drop from 2,486 cases in 2023. Specifically, 41 Arms Act cases were filed in the first half of 2024, down from 73 the previous year.
Patton highlighted that, between January and June 2024, 32 extortion cases led to the arrest of 35 individuals, with notable arrests in Dimapur (21), Chumoukedima (five), and Tuensang (three). During this period, authorities also filed 154 cases under the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act and recorded 116 drug-related cases. The Narcotics Control Bureau seized narcotics valued at over Rs 12 crore.
Ceasefire agreements for several NSCN factions, including NSCN-R and NSCN-KN, have been extended until April 2025. Similar extensions were granted to NSCN-K (Khango) and NSCN-K (Nikki) groups. Patton noted that parts of Nagaland are declared “disturbed areas” under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958. This status applies to eight districts—Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Peren—and specific police stations in Kohima, Mokokchung, Longleng, Wokha, and Zunheboto districts.
Reaffirming the government’s dedication, Patton emphasized the commitment to addressing ongoing challenges and ensuring the safety of Nagaland’s population.
