Historic Foundation Stone Laid for Nilgiri Tahr Conservation Centre in Coimbatore: A Bold Step Towards Wildlife Preservation!
Coimbatore’s commitment to wildlife conservation took a significant step forward with the recent foundation stone laying for the Nilgiri Tahr Conservation Centre on Dr. Nanjappa Road. The initiative, spearheaded by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, aims to establish a research and monitoring hub focused on the endangered Nilgiri tahr, the state animal of Tamil Nadu.
This project is a vital component of Project Nilgiri Tahr, which was launched in early 2023 to bolster conservation efforts. The new centre will be constructed on a 50-cent plot strategically located between Semmozhi Poonga and Periyar Arivulagam, providing a crucial venue for public education on this iconic species.
District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, along with Coimbatore MP Ganapathy P. Rajkumar, Mayor K. Ranganayaki, and Chief Conservator of Forests D. Venkatesh, marked the event with a ceremony that highlighted the collaborative effort behind the initiative. The centre is designed to bridge the gap between wildlife conservation and community engagement, transforming complex ecological data into accessible knowledge for schools and the public.
Plans for the centre include a modern four-storey building equipped with a biodiversity gallery, a flora and fauna gallery, and interactive exhibits aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of Tamil Nadu’s natural heritage. Additionally, a mini theatre and a children’s play area will enhance the educational experiences offered to visitors.
Currently, the Project Nilgiri Tahr team operates from a temporary facility within the Forest Department in North Coimbatore. Under the guidance of Project Director S. Senbagapriya and Assistant Director K. Ganeshram, the team, which includes a project scientist and four senior research fellows, coordinates its efforts with 14 forest divisions across the state that are home to the Nilgiri tahr.
The establishment of the Nilgiri Tahr Conservation Centre is expected to play a pivotal role in evidence-based conservation planning and long-term ecological stewardship in Tamil Nadu. By showcasing cutting-edge technologies and scientific insights, the centre aims to inspire future generations to engage in conservation efforts and recognize the importance of protecting the state’s unique biodiversity.
