Historic Saraighat Memorial Inaugurated in Guwahati by Himanta Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, March 4 inaugurated the Saraighat Rana Smritisaudh, a war memorial at Panbazar on the banks of the Brahmaputra that honours the valour of 132 warriors who defended Assam against Mughal forces in the 17th century. The memorial, opened in Guwahati, commemorates the historic Battle of Saraighat and aims to preserve the memory of that defining episode for future generations.
The memorial is built in traditional Ahom architectural style and bears the engraved names of the fallen, creating a visible record of those who fought. Officials say the site is intended both as a place of remembrance and as a resource for researchers and history enthusiasts interested in Assam’s past.
Speaking to the media after the inauguration, Sarma emphasised the importance of remembering the state’s history. “The Smritisaudh reflects Assam’s enduring pride in its heritage and the sacrifices made to safeguard its sovereignty,” he said, framing the project as part of a wider cultural revival.
The Battle of Saraighat, fought in 1671 under Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, is widely regarded in Assam as a symbol of resistance and resilience. The new memorial pays homage to that epochal moment and is presented by state authorities as a reinforcement of regional identity and historical consciousness.
On the same occasion, Sarma laid the foundation stone for Phase III of the Brahmaputra riverfront development, which will expand the riverfront park. Officials expect the completed phase to convert the area into a model recreational hub that serves both tourists and local residents.
Constructed over 2.5 acres at the site of the old Deputy Commissioner’s office, the memorial and expanded park are projected to enhance Guwahati’s aesthetic appeal and boost heritage tourism. The project aligns with the state government’s stated vision of integrating history, culture and urban modernisation along the iconic Brahmaputra riverfront.
