An unprecedented cyberattack reportedly struck Iran’s state broadcaster, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), last Sunday, with Israeli intelligence agency Mossad accused of breaching the broadcaster’s main headquarters and hijacking its television channels to air speeches by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former U.S. President Donald Trump. The Jerusalem Post reported the broadcast takeover, saying viewers across Iran saw the two leaders’ remarks simultaneously aired on state television.
IRIB sources said the channel had received shocking news on Saturday evening that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had been killed in a violent attack; the broadcaster reportedly planned to make a formal announcement on Sunday, but the alleged Israeli operation struck before that could take place. Iranian authorities also faced accusations that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had used the state channel for sensitive communications, according to the reports, while Israeli officials justified the strike by alleging the network long incited calls for Israel’s destruction, including advocating the use of nuclear weapons.
In response to the attack on its media infrastructure, Tehran reportedly launched a series of retaliatory strikes across the Middle East targeting military facilities linked to the United States and Israel. Authorities and local witnesses reported explosions near Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah and in the vicinity of the Burj Khalifa; for security reasons the world’s tallest tower was evacuated, creating alarm across the area.
The United Arab Emirates’ defense ministry said Iran carried out a drone attack on a naval base in Abu Dhabi, and attacks on the U.S. embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, were also reported to be ongoing.
