PM Modi Urges Civilian Safety with Netanyahu as West Asia Heats Up
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to express India’s concern over the escalating situation in West Asia, stressing that the protection of civilians must be a priority and urging an early cessation of hostilities. Modi conveyed these points during the telephonic discussion and, in a social media post, emphasised “the safety of civilians as a priority.”
The call came a day after Modi spoke with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Sunday night, condemning the attacks on the Gulf state and expressing solidarity with the UAE in what he described as difficult times.
According to UAE authorities, Iranian military strikes on the United Arab Emirates left three people dead and 58 others with minor injuries. The deceased were reported to be nationals of Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh, while the injured included Emirati and foreign nationals, among them an Indian.
The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi confirmed it is aware of the injured Indian national and is in contact with hospital authorities. “The Indian national is out of danger. We are rendering all possible assistance,” the mission said in a social media statement, without disclosing the exact location within the UAE where the person was hurt.
The UAE Ministry of Defence said its forces had responded to 165 ballistic missiles, two cruise missiles and 541 drones fired by Iran since the start of the offensive. Of the 541 drones detected, the ministry said 506 were intercepted and destroyed while 35 fell inside the country, causing material damage.
Iran launched the strikes after the United States and Israel carried out attacks on Iranian targets on Saturday, a series of actions that have sharply heightened tensions across the region. Indian leaders’ contacts with Israel and the UAE reflect New Delhi’s concern for regional stability and the safety of civilians and Indian nationals abroad.
