১০০ খন আসনত প্ৰতিদ্বন্দ্বিতাৰ লক্ষ্য: ৭ মাৰ্চত প্ৰাৰ্থী তালিকা চূড়ান্ত?
With the Assam assembly election heat rising ahead of polling, the ruling BJP and the principal opposition Congress have kicked off large-scale preparations for a high-stakes contest for Dispur. The BJP has launched its third-term push through its Jan Ashirwad Yatra, while the Congress is campaigning statewide under the banner of Samay Parivartan Yatra (Journey for Change). Congress sources say the party intends to contest roughly 100 of the state’s 126 seats and has reached a preliminary seat-sharing understanding to leave about 25 seats for allies.
A crucial Congress screening committee meeting is scheduled in New Delhi on March 7, 2026, under the chairmanship of Priyanka Gandhi, party sources said. Senior leaders expected to attend include Assam PCC president Gaurav Gogoi, MP Pradyut Bordoloi, Rakibul Hussain and former MP Ripun Bora. The meeting is likely to finalise the first tranche of candidates — around 40 seats concentrated in Upper and North Assam — as part of the party’s phased announcement plan. The BJP, meanwhile, has already prepared candidate lists for about 30 of the 43 constituencies traditionally seen as its stronghold in Upper and North Assam.
On seat-sharing, Congress has reportedly agreed to cede Sadiya, Khowang, Dibrugarh, Mahamara, Dhemaji and Sarupathar to allies. It is also considering offering the Bihali seat to the left-wing CPI(ML). The shape of an alliance with Akhil Gogoi’s Raijor Dal remains unclear; sources indicate there are proposals for Raijor Dal to get seats such as Sibsagar, Digboi, Sivasagar, Mariani, Bokakhat and Tezpur, and political observers expect current frictions over several constituencies to be resolved shortly.
Speculation is rife over ticket distribution. The Congress is said to be considering fielding MP Gaurav Gogoi from Jorhat to mount a stronger challenge to the BJP in Upper Assam. In Margherita, there is talk of Pratik Bordoloi, son of MP Pradyut Bordoloi, making his electoral debut, though Rahul Chetri from the Raijor Dal is also in contention. Other names being discussed in Upper Assam include David Fukun (Tinsukia), former MLA Durga Bhumij (Dumdum), former Chabua MLA Raju Chahuk (Makum) and Pranjal Ghatowar (Chabua-Lahowal).
Duliajan is seeing youth contenders such as Dhruvjyoti Gogoi and Poranjyoti Gogoi, and constituencies that turned against Congress in past elections are being closely watched. In Naharkatia, former minister Pranati Phukan is reportedly being pitched against Chief Minister Taranga Gogoi; in Tingkhong, Bipul Gogoi is named as a challenger to minister Bimal Borah. Sonari, Nazira and Titabar have also seen several local leaders’ names floated in discussions.
Across North Assam and other seats, names under consideration include Pallavi Saikia Gogoi (widow of the late MLA Member Gogoi) in Tinsukia, Sagarika Bora and Poranjyoti Saikia in Dergaon, Bitopan Saikia in Golaghat, Jolina Tirkey in Khumtai, former minister Rajivlochan Pegu in Majuli, Raju Medok in Jonai, Anand Narah in Dhakuakhana, Rani Narah and Ghan Burhagohain in Lakhimpur, Jayanta Bora and Dr. Ranjan Gogoi in Biswanath, former MP R.P. Sharma and Dadul Borokakati in Naduar, Ripun Bora in Borsola, Kartik Kurmi in Rangapara and Batas Orang in Dhekiajuli among others. Party insiders caution that these names are part of early lists and deliberations that the screening committee will refine in the coming days.
