Dhubri Theft Spree Sparks Outrage — Residents Demand Police Action
A surge of burglaries across Dhubri town has left residents alarmed and calling for urgent action, after thefts were reported in both residential neighbourhoods and commercial areas across all 16 municipal wards over the past few weeks. Locals say the repeated incidents — several of which reportedly occurred in broad daylight — have created widespread fear and eroded confidence in local policing.
The thefts have affected busy market zones as well as private homes, according to residents, who say the pattern shows the crimes are neither isolated nor confined to one part of town. Many people describe an atmosphere of unease, particularly shopkeepers and families who feel vulnerable during daytime hours when they expect visible law-and-order presence.
Community members have criticised what they describe as ineffective preventive measures and inadequate patrolling. Residents say they have lodged repeated complaints with the police but have seen little change on the ground, and they point to lapses in surveillance and enforcement as contributing factors in the rising frequency of thefts.
Town Sub-Inspector Ritumani Bairagi, currently serving as the Town Sub-Inspector (TSI) at Dhubri Sadar Police Station, has faced public criticism from sections of the community. The TSI is responsible for maintaining law and order across the town’s residential and business areas, and some residents say stronger leadership is needed to coordinate more effective policing.
A growing number of residents have formally appealed to the Dhubri District Superintendent of Police to intervene, asking for an assessment of the situation and for the appointment of a new TSI. “We feel insecure in our own neighbourhoods,” said a resident from one of the affected wards. “There must be stricter patrolling and swift action to stop these incidents.”
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement responding to the residents’ concerns. Until police provide clarity on investigations or steps to strengthen surveillance and patrols, locals say they will continue to press district officials for immediate, visible measures to restore safety and public confidence.
