The Indian Navy officially commissioned INS Anjadip on Friday, a state-of-the-art warship designed to enhance its anti-submarine warfare capabilities and bolster coastal surveillance. The commissioning ceremony took place at Chennai Port, officiated by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, alongside senior Navy officials and government representatives.

INS Anjadip is the third vessel introduced under the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft project, with a total of eight vessels planned. The ship derives its name from Anjadip Island, located off the coast of Karwar in northern Karnataka, which is strategically situated in the Arabian Sea.

Engineered for agility and operational efficiency, this “Dolphin Hunter” is specifically crafted to detect, track, and neutralize enemy submarines in coastal regions. The 77-meter vessel boasts a high-speed water-jet propulsion system, allowing it to reach top speeds of 25 knots. Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata, INS Anjadip is constructed to meet the demands of littoral combat environments, which are crucial for national security.

Equipped with advanced indigenous anti-submarine warfare weaponry and sensor systems, the ship features the hull-mounted sonar, Abhay, alongside Lightweight Torpedoes and Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Rockets. Beyond its primary role in countering submarines, the warship is also prepared for coastal surveillance, low-intensity maritime operations, and search and rescue missions.

Admiral Tripathi emphasized the significance of INS Anjadip in the context of safeguarding India’s extensive maritime interests, particularly in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. He noted that the Navy plans to induct 15 additional ships this year, further strengthening its operational capabilities. He highlighted the vessel’s cutting-edge features, asserting its readiness for combat and its role in maritime security.

In discussing the initiative for self-reliance, Admiral Tripathi remarked, “From an Indian perspective, self-reliance or Atma Nirbharta is beyond Make in India; it is trust in India.” This statement underscores the Navy’s commitment to indigenous production and operational autonomy, aligning with broader national interests.

The induction of INS Anjadip not only enhances the tactical capabilities of the Indian Navy but also reinforces its essential role in ensuring the security of maritime trade routes vital to India’s economy. The commissioning of this vessel marks a significant step in the Navy’s ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet and adapt to contemporary security challenges in a dynamic maritime landscape.

As INS Anjadip joins the ranks of the Indian Navy, it reflects the nation’s commitment to bolstering its defense infrastructure while embracing innovation and self-reliance in military capabilities. The unveiling of this advanced warship signifies a promising advancement in India’s naval power, with implications for regional security and maritime stability in the years to come.
