Empowering Future Generations: Education Commission Urges Scrap of EAPCET for English Medium Classes Without Automatic Promotions!

The Telangana Education Commission has submitted a comprehensive report to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, proposing significant reforms aimed at overhauling the state’s education system. Among the key recommendations is the abolition of automatic promotions for teachers, who would instead face performance evaluations every five years. This performance review would provide teachers with a two-year improvement period, after which, if no progress is seen, they may face dismissal. Importantly, these changes would apply only to newly recruited teachers, leaving current educators unaffected.

A major focus of the report is the introduction of English as the primary medium of instruction from nursery through to university level. Additionally, the Commission advocates for the implementation of a three-language formula starting in Class I, ensuring that students learn Telugu or Urdu, English, and Hindi. In response to parental demands, the report suggests integrating pre-primary education into primary schools.

The report also calls for the scrapping of the EAPCET entrance examination, proposing instead that admissions to engineering, agriculture, and pharmacy courses rely solely on marks obtained in the Intermediate examinations. To streamline the educational framework, the Commission recommends conducting Board examinations only in the second year of Intermediate, and merging the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Intermediate Boards. To elevate academic standards, the minimum pass percentage has been proposed to rise to 45%.

Moreover, the Telangana Education Commission has urged the abolition of the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) and the restructuring of the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) program into two distinct streams: B.Ed (Primary) for classes up to Class V and B.Ed (Secondary) for classes 6 to 12. Consultations with the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) have been suggested to facilitate these changes, emphasizing a mandatory 150 days of teaching practice for B.Ed students.

In terms of regulatory oversight, the report calls for amendments governing IIT-JEE and NEET coaching centers and hostels. Comprehensive regulations are recommended to ensure standards for fees, infrastructure, faculty qualifications, curriculum integrity, and student welfare, including mental health support and advertisements.

Addressing higher education, the Commission proposes to abolish the self-financing system in universities, advocating for popular self-financed courses to transition into regular offerings. It also emphasizes the need for student elections to adhere to the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, promoting fair electoral practices within educational institutions.

This strategic report reflects a commitment to transforming Telangana’s education landscape and prioritizing student-centric policies. The proposed reforms aim not just to enhance educational quality but also to align with contemporary demands, ensuring a robust framework that nurtures future talent.

As these recommendations are debated, the focus remains on improving educational standards and fostering an environment conducive to learning. The full impact of these proposed changes will depend on implementation and stakeholder engagement in the coming months.
